During this half-day workshop Dr Amita Sehgal will discuss how the setting within which psychotherapy has traditionally been practiced is affected when therapy is delivered over the internet. She will refer to her work with couples to discuss circumstances in which couple therapy was provided online using videoconferencing software (like VSee and Skype). Clinical implications of working psychotherapeutically using digital media versus working in-person, will be discussed.
The workshop aims to offer
- An understanding of whether videoconferencing/telecommunication technology aids or hinders the traditional practice of couple psychotherapy
- An opportunity to think about the role of the setting when working using digital technology
This workshop is for practitioners working with couples or individuals with relationship issues.
Participants are encouraged to bring their experiences of working digitally, either via videoconferencing and/or telephone, for discussion during the workshop.

Dr Amita Sehgal, MA, PhD, is a psychoanalytic couple psychotherapist. She is a Visiting Lecturer at Tavistock Relationships, London, and maintains a private practice in Central London. She is especially interested in the neurobiology of contemporary attachment perspectives in couple psychotherapy, and her interest in the psychological processes of separation and divorce informs her commitment to a non-confrontational resolution of family disputes.
Amita is published in the field of couple psychotherapy and her most recent publication is an edited book, Sadism: Psychoanalytic Developmental Perspectives (Karnac-Routledge, 2018).
Amita is registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council); and with Resolution (formerly the Solicitors Family Law Association).
